Inspirations
With a little help from my friends!

running with my friend! There are so many inspiring and enlightening people in the horse world who are increasingly available and able to shine a light on our own path. Perhaps we might like to tread there right now or just know what is out there for future exploration.

This section is here to help you negotiate the terrain as I have done and perhaps become inspired to explore further afield. Without the inspiring work and wisdoms of some of these people I would not have gotten to a place of great excitement and joy in working with my own horses.

If you would like my assistance in your journey then please do contact me and arrange a meeting. I am thoroughly motivated to help you find a way with your horse that is positive, meaningful and mutually developmental; in training, in touch, in health and well-being.

Know Your Training Methods

traditional riding pursuitsWe all need to find our own way with training our horses that fits in with our personal lifestyle, resources and aspirations.

There is a plethora of training systems, methods and ideas to choose from and all with a variety traditional correctness or claims of success. But how can you discern one from the other?

Is the horse secure? Confident? Trusting? On side? Fearful? Resistant? Stressed? Forthcoming? Thinking about problem solving? Reactive? Compliant? Motivated?

One major aspect to keep in mind when considering a training system is the differences between 'what is being said that is being done' (the clever marketing spiel) and what is actually being done. The horse will always provide the clues if you look carefully, objectively and with an educated eye. Know the different approaches of positive and negative reinforcement, positive and negative punishment, etc...

Waterhole Rituals

carolyn resnick methodCarolyn Resnicks' Waterhole Rituals are a real source of inspriation! As a child Carolyn followed a group of wild horses and observed their interactions.

In her book 'Naked Liberty' she describes how, after much time being amongst the group and being accepted by the herd members, the lead mare invited her to climb aboard and then proceeded to walk through the group showing off her human!

Finding The Try

What a gentle man! Mark Rashid's DVD 'Finding the Try' highlights the sensitivity and awareness that makes 'pressure-and-release' training gentle, kind and educational for the horse. Mark is responding with a release of pressure for the smallest response that the horse makes to the aids that he uses. His timing and clarity are excellent about what he is working to achieve.

Mark is an american  cowboy which means there are fundamental training differences about how a horse 'should go' or respond to the seat, leg or rein which is quite different to our European style of riding concepts. However, he cannot be surpassed in his message of helping the horse to make the right decision and help the horse to find his way to answer the question. If pressure and release is to be employed then this is the way to go about doing it!
