'Massage Your Own Horse' Workshops | Print |

Owners should feel encouraged to mutually groom, touch and massage their horses as part of understanding and bonding with their individual horse; regular physical touch helps to maintain a sense of well-being, physical relief from muscular soreness and supporting communication at an interspecies level. Learning to read your horse and work with touch both for therapeutic value and for developing your relationship can give hours of mutual pleasure while at the same time being progressive for your horse's development. You will start to notice more about your individual horse and his/her personal tensions.

  • The musculo-skeletal system visited
  • Massage Techniques
  • Demo of core stretches for your horse
  • Practical hands-on experience
  • Caveats and contra-indications
  • Making your massage personal for your individual horse

If you would like to explore the do's and don'ts of touch for your horse then you can either organise a one-to-one session or organise a group of you and your friends to engage in a friendly informal workshop.

A workshop situation will allow you to understand the principles of massage which you can apply to your own horse, along with particular techniques that will be appropriate to your individual horse.

Obviously a trained professional will know about the more intricate details of massage and anatomy to inform their treatment protocol, but you, the horse owner should be assured that your input can have an equally dramatic effect. You can discover ways of working gently with your horse, using breath, intuitive touch and attention all done with a commitment to your individual horse which may well go further. Stretching your horse's limbs should be done with utmost care and attention and clear directions will ensure that you help and don't harm your horse; even by knowing how to take care with a common girth stretch.

We will explore:

  • Using touch and introducing your horse to therapeutic touch
  • Massage techniques and their safe use
  • Understanding feel, breath and intent.
  • Locating potentially sore or painful areas.
  • Staying safe
  • Contra-indications to be aware of
  • Being aware of areas not to work on
  • When to get professional help
